The father who became a star

Image
Photo by  cottonbro  from  Pexels Munna quietly climbed the stairs of his house leading to the terrace. It was a one-storied house that overlooked a jogger's park. Munna wore a sullen look. He did not recollect the last time that he had played with his friends in the neighborhood. His mother had warned him not to step out of the house without a face mask. Munna’s only solace was the time that he spent in the terrace in the evenings staring at the sky. Munna was a student studying in Class IV. He lived with his parents in this home. Everything was fine until a few months ago. Their world turned upside down.  His father, a health care official in a private hospital, had succumbed to the deadly pandemic. Munna did not even get to see his father when the latter passed away. The fear of the virus seemed to have gripped the whole world. Munna was devastated and so was his mother. Since he was close to his father, Munna often wondered why his father never returned...

Shakuntala Devi - The Human Computer

Image
https://www.boloji.com/blog/2429/shakuntala-devi--the-human-computer The only memories that I have of Shakuntala Devi are the ads that I used to see in newspapers like Times of India where she informed readers about her availability for astrological consultations. Then I happened to buy her book “Awaken the Genius in your Child” in the (now defunct) “Granth” book-store. Then there was a news report about a burglary in her house in Bangalore. But it seemed that, over the years, everyone had forgotten about Shakuntala Devi, the mathematical genius. Director Anu Menon and actress Vidya Balan have strived hard to bring back the memories of the great mathematical genius (the human computer) Shakuntala Devi. In the last decade or so, Balan has established herself as an actress of substance – with roles in Bollywood being specially written for her. She seems to perform in Hindi films based on biographies of famous personalities with consummate ease and panache. Vidya Balan’s competence ...

Innovation - but at what cost?

Image
Innovation is the exploitation of creative potential to generate ideas that can be commercialized through entrepreneurial spirit and verve. In the last few years, technology has had a supreme influence on innovation management. But have you ever wondered about the other side of this development? In most cases, it appears as though entrepreneurial innovations have been spurred more by the lure of green bucks and generation of business profits at any cost – ethical norms and governance principles be damned. Ironically, most start-ups claim to have attracted investments from abroad despite the fact that their losses have consistently subsumed their operational efficiencies. It is akin to a situation where the municipality makes great efforts to clean the roads only to have people dump their garbage again and again. A vicious cycle indeed! Thus the start-ups will make losses but continue to attract investments which will make them more complacent so that they can afford to make more ...

Is this not child labor?

Image
The menace of child labor continues unabated in pockets of India despite child labor being declared as an illegal activity. The most gruesome way to torture a child is to employ his/her services and expect the child to perform the task impeccably. Many children who were employed to act in Indian movies by their pushy parents have voiced their frustrations on being forced to act without a break. When these children became adults, their deprived childhood became a source of frustration for them haunting them forever. Some of them were able to pick up the broken pieces and reconcile with the truth about their shattered dreams. Most others were not so lucky. In a low-cost housing accommodation opposite to the apartment complex where I live, I witness child labor of a different kind. The husband, wife and eldest son (a cute and adorable moppet all of three years) live with the wife's mother. The husband generally wakes up at 10 am, brushes his teeth leisurely and plays loud music in the...

Those wonderful terrace memories!

Image
Technology has subsumed our daily lives today. Everyone is busy with their smartphones – whether they are at home, traveling or working. Smartphone has become an extension of our physical appearance – our personality. In the same home, one can witness that children are glued to devices while their parents are busy chatting on the phone or watching YouTube videos on their respective smartphones. But there were those golden days in the ’70s and 80’s when co-operative housing societies had neighbors visiting each other. Whether it was home-made snacks or homemade ice cream (using Polson ice cream powder mix) neighbors believed in sharing and caring. Evening hours (4 pm to 7 pm) in the building reverberated with children playing cricket, hide-and-seek, marbles and an assortment of outdoor games. Winter evenings saw adults and children venturing out at nights to play a game of badminton. Card parties on weekends were not uncommon. Everyone in the building looked forward to the terrace...
